How the British Royal Family Influences the U.K.'s International Image
Did you know that the British Royal Family is one of the most well-known families in the world? The House of Windsor traces its roots back to the early 1900s and has helped produce an international image for the U.K. When people think of the U.K., myself included, one of the first things that comes to mind is the monarchy, and foreigners form their opinions of the country based on what they see. A country's image is very important to maintain because it affects tourism, international relations, and the economy. Many aspects play into an image, and how it gets shaped by onlookers. For this post, I will be focusing on how the British Royal Family contributes to the U.K.’s image abroad by serving as a symbol of British traditions and global relations. It will be more formal than the others, but I hope you find this information just as interesting!
Traditions

The British Royal Family can be seen as the heart of the U.K., serving as figureheads for the country’s international image. It’s been said that “the institution of monarchy is a symbolic linchpin, constituting Britain’s national identity and anchoring collective belonging,” meaning everything the family does reflects on the country (Browning & Howe, 2025). For example, the Royal Family continues many historical traditions that are recognized around the world. Traditions surrounding the monarchy get global attention through media outlets, allowing everyone to learn a part of the U.K.’s heritage. One of the most popular is Trooping the Colour, which became an annual ceremony after George III became King in 1760 (The Household Division, N.D). This event gains massive media coverage, especially when the Royal Family stands on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. The history of Trooping the Colour shows the strength of the U.K. military to other countries, as well as unity between soldiers and the Monarch. Internationally, it shows how the British Royal Family protects the country’s heritage and promotes strong ties among its people. Thus, it contributes to the country's overall image and creates buzz among global fans.
Although not a tradition, another popular, and my favorite, ceremony that gains global attention is royal weddings. For instance, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding had 29.2 million Americans tuned in to watch because of the extravagant event (Bradley, 2018). Royal weddings show the beauty of the country and alliances, although in the case of Harry and Meghan, it may have damaged the global reputation of the U.K. as they stepped back from royal duties. The U.K. was not very accepting of Meghan, and since she was a part of the Royal Family, the unfavorability reached global outlets. I remember hearing about the controversy of the relationship all the way over in America. In most cases, though, a Royal Wedding contributes positively to a country's image abroad by highlighting the historical ceremony in its culture. The ceremony acts as global advertising for the country's image, allowing the U.K. to show itself to the world and gain recognition through soft power. Along with maintaining traditions, the British Royal Family also contributes to the U.K.’s international image through global relations.
Global Relations

Through visiting countries or hosting foreign heads of state, the British Royal Family displays the U.K. as a country of goodwill. Visits to countries not only gain media attention but have also helped shape the U.K. position in the world throughout history. His Majesty King Charles III’s visit to America to meet with the U.S. President Donald Trump is a great example of how the Royal Family positions the U.K. Professor of International Relations at the University of Kent, Richard Whitman, stated that “the visit was a masterclass in how the Royal Family can be used as an effective foreign policy tool by Britain, impacting perceptions of the country,” showing the impact a visit can have on international views of the U.K. (Whitman, 2026). Everyone wants to get a glimpse of the British Royal Family, so when a country hears they are visiting, it sparks conversations. Conversations, aka word of mouth, give the U.K. international earned media, meaning the country is not paying for recognition. When done correctly, this can be the best kind of attention.
As for hosting foreign leaders, the Monarchy continues the tradition of using pomp, which are “impressive and colorful ceremonies, especially traditional ceremonies on public occasions,” which creates a grand display for their visitors (Cambridge Dictionary, N.D). This contributes to the international image because it projects soft power and historical continuity, which helps establish the country’s stability. The ceremonies also help strengthen international relationships; putting on a grand display makes the visitor feel valued and connected to the culture. These displays for formal visits show the leader and their country that they are welcomed to the U.K. and “not only signal respect for a visiting head of state but also showcase centuries-old British traditions to a global audience” (Perry, 2025). Continuing the use of pomp when hosting foreign leaders also gives the U.K. a look of power and unity as the country comes together. Another powerful global relations strategy that influences the U.K.’s worldwide perception is the Royal Family's role in the Commonwealth.
The Commonwealth is composed of 56 independent nations, all of which share similar values and collaborate on issues like democracy and climate change, and at the head of it all is King Charles III (Loft, 2023). Being the head of such an important and recognized institution gives the U.K. a favorable look of leadership and commitment to civil rights. This helps maintain and shape the U.K.’s global relationship with countries within the Commonwealth and globally creates an image of cooperation and unity.
Through my research, I found that even though the monarch's real power has declined over the years, the British Royal Family still plays an important role in the U.K.’s national identity. The Royal Family has continued to evolve the U.K.’s identity, positioning the country as a place of heritage and culture. Through the continuation of traditions and the unique use of power, the U.K. is globally recognizable and admired with a strong international image. The British Royal Family will continue to be a vital symbol, and in an era of rapid change and shifting international relationships, they portray the U.K. as stable and united.
